Technique:

Shomen Uchi Ikkajo Osae-2

After Class:

Jiyuwaza with Jo
(Sensei didn't ask me if I wanted to do his uke, just told me to hold and push the jo he was holding...)
I flipped and flipped and flipped...and flipped and flipped!
Missed flipping ONLY a couple of times, it was a lot of fun : )

Note:
Class of 5...I remember having the hardest time getting used to Uke for Sokumen Iriminage...I still do have a hard time falling away but its not totally out of blue any longer. I never thought of "why" it's hard...seeing people trying for the first time makes me realize that the image of falling onto the mat from your back is quite scary.

Sensei told the class that we'll do the technique with Shumatsu dosa today, I expected him to choose "Shihonage" but he picked, "Ikkajo-2". Sensei kept showing to the class as demo in the slowest pace, except for the last time...it was fast and I flew as I usually do... : ) Smashing my knee onto the mat the harest with his Ikkajo-2, I always have to be so prepared to do his Uke for 2 techniques. He also showed us how to do Uke, and he stepps far out his knee before falling. I think I'm missing it by distance. That gave me an idea that I could make my Uke better if I could do that knee walking better before going into the air.

Note:
Class of 2...Honey and me trained for Embu.

We are trying to make them show in 2 patterns, slow and fast. They are both not so easy to do...still working on it.

Seems like...flipping is the best and fastest way to get out of any situation after all ; )

Shihonage Kuzushi:

Koshinage: go low to get to the position

Flipping well makes a lot for both of them...the image of being smashed onto the mat is certainly scary...yet "they" say there are ways to fall without getting hurt...after 1000 times of smashing, I may learn the better way ; )

Working with kids is fun ♪ and interesting : ) Require to be so extra careful, yet have to do the right thing...and have to stay LOW.

Being Uke for 2 kids who tried Sokumen Iriminage for the first time...they seem having less problems than adults who try for the first time...that technique must really work : )

I was very busy training for ourselves, so couldnt pay any attention to the other side of the dojo which were training for Embu. : )

Note:
Class of 6... again...the answer is sometimes M... : )

I totally dont remember how I used to deal with Kihon Dosa in the beginning. I remember not knowing nor remembering anything at all everytime I came out to the class, so it was always new except for the slight memory of the movements. Well, getting the introduction in the beginning must be nice : ) and I'm glad I had a chance to realize it even after over a year ; )

Since I dont remember how I tried to learn or understand all these movements, I just did not know what to tell people who was experiensing it for the first time.

In spite of all those condition, I think the class went all right. People still had a chance to learn somethings. For beginners, there isn't much choice, yet for others...to "see" or "care" whether others are doing "all right" or not, pushes people up. The output hits people as a sign for them to realize what they know, they can do. It doesnt suggest for teachers to forget to set their alarms. : )

People like to do what they can, that feeling makes them feel better, and gives a motivation for wanting to try more...8 y/o started to go lower when I suggested to do in the condition of "if you can", and she just kept going lower because she could. It involves a lot of flexibility with her body as a very young person, still these simple mind set shows an amazing effort. It was good to see, and will always good to remember. : )

Now, I can choose to flip, still land with my back and that hurts...

Class of 6. The family seems very enjoying : )

360 pivot...we dont do it so often, yet I remember telling Stumpy about a year ago..."I'll be able to do it someday"... I still dont do it well, but sometimes : )

Another walking practice. Its really interesting...

I kinda had a big dinner last night, it was the hardest morning to get up...I almost decided not to do so...yet it was a good thing that I got up after all. It just feels better to do Aikido : )

Note:
Class of 7, again worked on Embu stuff. After rehearsing it for an hour, we got better on walking without looking down : )

The effect of "Calling" is big...once we ended up doing the other side of shite among 4 pairs...it must be a tough job...we always appreciate our "Caller" more than he knows ; )

Embu menu

Note:
Class of 2, Sugar...and Honey?

Went through Embu menu to time it. We spent so much time walking on the mat to get to the spots...surprisingly and not surprisingly, its not easy to do. I like it and I also kinda like the formality of the demonstration as well.

Beginner's Course

Basic:

Back Breakfalls
Forward Rolling Breakfalls

Kamae

Hiriki no Yosei-1
Hiriki no Yosei-1 with partner (with a 8 y/o girl!)

Technique:

Note:

Class of 8, very enjoyable working on the basic basic.

Still, its so hard not to do other than you are supposed to do, better yet fun to learn or let my body learn to do.

Hiriki no Yosei-1 with 8 y/o girl was really fun. I did not know how low I could get. Its good to find something seems impossible, actually doable. : )

Going forward feeling: the way I feel is tighting my arms from about scapula area, that feeling goes down to lower back, and push it together, dont know this is the right way to do, still I can feel my back this way, I may feel totally differently later.

71: Wednesday 5:45 : March 15, 2006

Basic:

Hiriki no Yosei-1 (right)
Hiriki no Yosei-2 (right)

Yokomen Uchi Sankajo Osae-2
Suwariwaza Shomen Uchi Sankajo Osae-1
Suwariwaza Shomen Uchi Sankajo Osae-2

Note:

Class of 3...Sugar? Again??

Working on details continues...as my carring my coffee in a mug continues : )

Kata Mochi Nikajo 1&2 have different approches for Nikajo...Hulk chest/shoulder is important.
I can "proudly" call this one as one of techniques I dont know what I'm really doing...

Sankajo-1: I usually prefer 2-techniques than 1-ones, but definitely not for Sankajo. Everyone's heavy is not an excuse...I know that much, I just can not find the circle to get Sankajo, or when to keep Sankajo...I mean for 2. I can see the Sankajo line much clearer for 1, and can go for it. Of course, needs a lot more practice to go further to the side and all...at least I do know what I am supposed to work on : )

***Suwariwaza Shomen Uchi Sankajo Osae-2: One of the most difficult to do...its even hard to do Uke!

We continue from here tomorrow...

Tuesday, March 14, 2006

70: Tuesday 7:00 : March 14, 2006

Basic:

Shumatsu Dosa-1
Shumatsu Dosa-2

180 pivot with partner (In & Out)

Maai:Happou Kujushi

Technique:

Jiyuwaza practice starts from Katate Mochi
Ikkajo Nage
Kokyu Nage

Jujutsu Technique (held by shoulders, and get the belt and chin to turn uke around)

Note:
Class of 6, how to move uke around...by using the circle around uke...there ARE spots available to do that...its ONLY to find that thin line by making the minimam movement. : )

Ikkajo Nage: Make my thumb "Scary Thumb" in order to grab an elbow and hang on to it...then Uke HAS TO roll out of Ikkajo.
Also, Dont go too far from Uke...Scary Thumb grabs on, would do better.

Kokyu Nage: the hand action with inside pivot is tough (I can not move anybody bigger than me) Let the hand go a bit, then turn...dont let Kamae go off. There is no pulling but moving needed.

Good news is...FINALLY, I started to feel using my hip for Shumatsu Dosa...and wonder how much longer it takes to start feeling pushing back to the mat...

69: Tuesday 5:45 : March 14, 2006

Class of 3...Sugar?

Men! We only did 3 techniques?? Its kinda hard to believe...yet it takes so much time to work on details...

Ushiro Ikkajo: My arms are not LONG!! There has got to be a line I can make that perfect egg shape...Look for my Egg shape.

Shomen Uchi Nikajo: I totally forgot how to get to Nikajo from Shomen Uchi...its actually a cool movement to get there though...

Needs lots of practice...Yet, so many to go over, so much to do...!!

Say...21 Techniques in Dai Ichi, 32 Techniques in Dai Ni...!!

Forward Rolling Breakfalls
Back Rolling Breakfalls

Technique:
Shomen Uchi Shomen Iriminage-1
Shomen Uchi Yonkajo Osae-2
Katate Mochi Nikajo Osae-1

Note:
Class of 6 plus 1, 7 y/o! 545 boys finally got together for the first time in nearly 2 months!! : )

Stumpy let us keep working on 3, interesting session.

Shomen Uchi Shomen Iriminage-1: I must have been standing in a wrong position, it was too hard for me to make the last step having heavier guys on my hip...it must be an angle.

Shomen Uchi Yonkajo Osae-2: Baby finger(s) and the bottom of other fingers and thumb!

Katate Mochi Nikajo Osae-1: Again, angle must be wrong, still my nikajo sucks... ; P

I have been working more with Stumpy for the last month...boys asked me what was going on, which I did not have an answer other than working on stuff in details....YET, the next day I found what happened to my body during my Hula Dancing lesson wearing T-shirts...
My Upper arms got BIGGER!! I do not have big shoulders, so my arms are too big for them...Men!! I have got to do something about it : )

Thursday, March 09, 2006

67: Thrusday 7:00 : March 9, 2006

Basic:

Pivot practice

Technique:
Starts from Katate Mochi
Shomen Iriminage
Kokyu Nage (pivot, slide to the side and chin throw to the other way
Ushiro Otoshi (dont know the name)(reverse pivot, bring hand to the other side while getting behind uke, and bring right uke down with shoulder)

Self Defense: what if someone grabs your elbow : turn, hit chin with elbow and push the arm go around and drag uke around.

Note:
Class of 5, Jiyuwaza Practice. So much of Kagari-geiko means pretty much of running around: )

For Shomen Irimiange: I couldnt help smashing uke's neck not intentionally...I was trying not to move around but my pivot was too straight so I couldnt move bigger guys around me, then I had to smash to reach to Iriminage position. Need to work on pivot.

The more I think of it...its mostly with Pivots...

66: Thursday 5:45 : March 9, 2006

Basic:

Techinique:

Shomen Uchi Shihonage
Jiyuwaza Shomen Uchi Shihonage Kuzushi

Shomen Uchi Yonkajo Osae-1

Hanmi Handachi Katate Mochi Shihonage-1
Hanmi Handachi Ryote Mochi Shihonage

Note:
No Boys.. Just Sensei and Me!

Today's special was to find a find point for me to make techniques irresistible : )
We totally came up with secrets which I dont want anyone else to know!!
I know they will know when I do it... : P

Shomen Blocking for Shihonage: Go get it and bring the attack along, there is no need to HIT.

Shihonage AND Yonkajo: Instead of making extra twist...Push with Thumb and Baby finger and the bottom of index finger... and when I get it, DO NOT let it go.

The hour felt like 3 minutes.

The Beginner's Course Started!

Today's Theme: Kamae and Tai no Henko

Basic:

Migi Hanmi no Kamae
Hidari Hanmi no Kamae

Tai no Henko-1
Tai no Henko-2

Technique:

Note:
Class of 3, starts from the Basic...

I have been working on to make my balance hevier and steadier, it feels I started understanding what teachers have been telling me about the upper body, still I can not feel what to do with my lower legs, and easily go off balance, which effects my suriashi a lot. And also to move as far as possible.

At the very end, Stumpy let us compete who gets to go the lowest, furthest...I was running out of my energy to look the other nor even smile, so I just tried to go whatever I could do that time. Amazingly, my body reacted the most for that last 5 minutes. I will try to remember when I get stuck how to do it, try going as far as possible, even thats way beyond...I might see something from it. I really couldnt react while we were doing, but I think it was a good call : )

64: Wednesday 5:45 : March 8, 2006

Today's Theme: Ikkajo
Key word for the next 3 months : Aim

Basic:

Technique:
Shomen Uchi Ikkajo Osae-2
Suwariwaza Yokomen Uchi Ikkajo Osae-1
Suwariwaza Yokomen Uchi Ikkajo Osae-2
Katate Mochi Ikkajo Osae-1
Katate Mochi Ikkajo Osae-2

Note:

Class of 3! 4 people on the mat! The record of the month!! ; ) Its supposed to be back to 5 from next week ; )
I tried to make my uke heavier and not to escape, and give the best strikes at every attack.
My upper arms are so sore by Shihonage from yesterday : )
I thought I knew better of Suwari Yokomen Ikkajo and Katate Mochi Ikkajo...was totally wrong...or mine just did not work on these boys as everything else...when I train with these boys, my techniques hardly work! So, I keep pushing myself to find the line or point to make it happen...and how do I know when it works when I train with other people!!
Of course, I see it with my head, but my body still can not find the way to make the difference.
...my body screams, "Holy Cow!", a lot lately... : P
Katate Mochi Ikkajo-1: the fine line of circle is MUST, otherwise its just a dragging uke's arm.
.....
I love Ikkajo...its simple and strong...and difficult...
same, same, same...practice, practice, practice...

Class of 8! Quite big class, the test result was announced...

Congrats Everyone!

Again, Katate Mochi Yonkajo: Its really really tough not to make it too strong...I hardly know how to do it, and I sure know even less doing less hurting...

I guess...its "again" one of the path...and "again", its not easy...well... : )

Ryote Mochi Stuff: Sensei told us that the smaller the better...I will try to remember that, the idea is neat.

62: Tuesday 5:45 : March 7, 2006

So many SHIHO NAGE!!
Poor my wrists, Poor my elbows...Still its better to have 545 boys on the mat : )

Katate Mochi Shihonage-1:Try move far to the side

Hanmi Handachi Katate Mochi Shihonage-1:Never come up, stay on knees...wow...
Hanmi Handachi Katate Mochi Shihonage-2: Knee Pivot...need a lot of practice
Hanmi Handachi Ryote Mochi Shihonage-1: Shite actually comes up with the second step, how did I do that for the last test...remember doing but not much else...

Yokomen Uchi Shihonage-1 : Dont forget punching along with blocking
Yokomen Uchi Shihonage-2: Have to find a line to get Uke's shoulder while pivoting

Katate Mochi Yonkajo Osae-1 : This is really a neat technique, and the line with the circle goes in a same way all the way...

6th Kyu Test

Tehnique:
Kata Mochi Hijishime-1
Suwariwaza Kata Mochi Hijishime-1

Note:
Class of 6, 3 Tests meant looooong Seiza time for me : )
I thought everyone showed a good focus and it went all well. Or it was more like to say, very impressive how people show their progress in the last few weeks.

Hijishime: hold Hiji tight even not getting it right on the elbow, then uke has no choice but to go around...(cuz it hurts!)

Well done Everyone, HOPE YOU ALL PASSED!!

Note:

Class of 6, everyone ready for the test?? : )

Am I the greatest tipper of the world or what?? ; P
Its kinda fun to scare people with information they havent experiensed just yet : )
I am like an angel : )

For Tai no Henko-1, I started wondering the arm circle watching teachers do it...umm...well, just try to see the difference and not to go off the center.

59: Thursday 5:45: March 2, 2006

Basic:

Tai no Henko-1
Tai no Henko-2
Hiriki no Yosei-1
Hiriki no Yosei-2

Technique:

Suwariwaza Yokomen Uchi Shomen Iriminage-1
Yokomen Uchi Shomen Iriminage-2
Suwariwaza Yokomen Uchi Shomen Iriminage-2
Yokomen Uchi Shomen Iriminage-2

Note:
Class of 1! ITS ALL SHOMEN IRIMINAGE!

We went through so so so so so so many points...

  1. For Suwariwaza, its not to slide with knees, its to walk with knees. (not easy)
  2. For Suwari and Tachi, its to push from the back to go forward. (or for everything...)
  3. Always, do not to leave Uke behind, nor leave own shoulder behind..(if you do, pulling has to be involved and that can not happen)
  4. The Secret of Aikiodo...always pushing no pulling.
  5. Do not smash Uke's neck area (or they hate you eventually...), the way to get Uke is move to the side (distance depends on the size/height of Uke)
  6. Do not pull arm backwards (probably for anything) to get to Iriminage position, you will help Uke to recover the balance.
  7. To get Yokomen X, the circle is rather small. Ohterwise you get too extended and can not get make Uke forward.
  8. The aim(or one of) for 45 degree for the throw is to give Uke an escape path, after all its not to break someone...so Uke can expect what to happen and how to get out of it.
  9. For breakfalls, make a big step out and roll toward the throw angle. ( have to fix my angle)
  10. Blocking for Yokomen is the same movement for Suwari 1 & 2.

It could be more...yet I will work on these points!

Class of 5. Finally, I started feeling soreness in my back!! Let's hope I'm making progress on my Kihon Dosa : )

I almost made myself laugh while telling buddies some details of Kihon Dosa, I mean...I was asking myself, how do I know all this? : )

Even though tests are not the goal for Aikido, its good to have short time goals to achieve. : )

Shomen Tsuki Kotegaeshi-1
Shomen Tsuki Kotegaeshi-2
Shomen Uchi Kotegaeshi-1
Shomen Uchi Kotegaeshi-2
Yokomen Uchi Sankajo Osae-1
Yokomen Uchi Sankajo Osae-2
Shomen Uchi Yonkajo Osae-1
Kata Mochi Sokumen Iriminage-2
Kata Mochi Nikajo-2
Yokomen Uchi Shihonage-2

Note:

Class of 2...had the hardest time with Shomen Tsuki Kotegaeshi! It took me like 5 times to get the right movement...so much of brain activity for 6:00am!

I did better than yesterday...I mean, my body were less apart than yesterday, still things which dont work, dont work... : )

Kotegaeshi: Do not go forward on Kotegaeshi, I end up far from Uke by making it too forward
Sokumen Iriminage: Knee forward , knee forward...

Kata Mochi Nikajo: Uke's attack(pull or push) is absolutely necessary. The circle is made with the attack to get to Nikajo position. This is really a tough one.

Shihonage: Bring right down with a BABY FINGER, Shihonage will become a killer : P

Sankajo-2: Sankajo-2?? Is that supposed to work?? How?? ha ha ha... Seriously, I'm aiming to get the shoulder rather than wrist twist, it takes LOTS of practice... : )

So much to work on...so much can be worked on...who invented this??
