24: Tuesday 7:00 : January 31, 2006

Today's Agenda: Back Breakfalls
My Agenda: Keep my head tacked

Basic:
Back Breakfalls (70)
Tai no Henko-1 (Right and Left)

---7:30

Technique:
Katate Mochi Sokumen Iriminage-1
Hiji Mochi Sokumen Iriminage-1
Kata Mochi Sokumen Irimiange-1

Note:
Class of 5 and 2 sensei : ) 7 people, 70 back breakfalls ... When Sensei said, Today's agenda is "Back breakfalls"...he looked very happy...

Worked with Steven (who just had a baby boy!) for the whole time.

For Kata Mochi Sokumen Iriminage: I remember having a problem with this coming up and get to Iriminage part, but I just couldnt figure it out during the class...

Roland sensei changed my whole angle of Katate Mochi Sokumen Iriminage...To keep my balance steady, I have to change my angle. Wow...makes so much sense.

50% succeeded saying Osu outloud : )

23: Tuesday 5:45 : January 31, 2006

Basic:

Technique:
Katate Mochi Shiho Nage-1
Katate Mochi Shiho Nage-2
Kata Mochi Hijishime-1
Kata Mochi Hijishime-2
Shomen Uchi Ikkajo Osae-1
Shomen Uchi Ikkajo Osae-2
Katate Mochi Nikajo Osae-1
Katate Mochi Nikajo Osae-2
Yokomen Uchi Sankajo Osae-1
Shomen Uchi Yonkajo Osae-1
Katate Mochi Yonkajo Osae-1

Note:
Class of 2, Honey is back! Sensei had a train trouble, so we started going through Dai Ichi Kihon Techniques.

Honey picked the right points I need to be(and am) working on ; )

Shomen Uchi: Push into the attack, dont just wait and stop...you lose your kamae and its too late...Honey explained it to me as to make circle like a wave.
Yonkajo: When I'm able to concentrate on using just one spot (which is the spot I'm supposed to be putting Yonkajo), I can get Yonkajo easier, stronger.

Pin: As always, Stumpy made the point...1) SINK 2)SHIFT 3) KNEE FORWARD
Yokomen Uchi: Make a straight curve and hit on the side of the head.

Katate Mochi Yonkajo: punch, Hiriki no Yosei arm bringing up stepping towards Uke and bring Uke's elbow little higher, Hijishime-1 elbow slice with big step forward, get Yonkajo shape and Yonkajo-1 movement.

22: Saturday 6:15 : January 28, 2006

Basic:
Forward rolling breakfalls (using bags to go far)
180 pivot with partners
Nikajo Practice
Shomen Tsuki Practice

Technique:
Katate Mochi Nikajo Nage (with 2, with 3)
Shomen Tsuki Attack Practice
Shomen Tsuki Kokyu Nage (180 pivot, put both hands on Uke's arm and get writst with inside hand, then give it to outside hand, throw)
Shomen Tsuki Shomen Iriminage

Note:
Class of 5, with 2 senseis : )

Forward rolling: Stay longer in the air
Shomen Tsuki: Make it in totally one motion...
Throw: to go forward from back leg

Shomen Tsuki Shomen Iriminage was the coolest to do Shomen Iriminage! Not much to make Shomen Iriminage happen, you can get Shomen Iriminage right there if you move correctly for the first motion.

Nikajo...nikajo..nikajo..nikajo..nikajo.......

Another topic for me: how much to "talk" on the mat, how much people (including me)would learn from "talking" on the mat...

Thursday, January 26, 2006

Ryote Mochi Shomen Iriminage-1

Suwari Kokyu ho Practice
(Uke just holds Shite's hands tight, and Shite tries to move Uke without using ARMS, but BODY) This is to practice upper body of Tench Nage

Class of 5, contrary to working with 2 guys with arms twice of size of mine for the first class...I worked with 2 girls with arms with half the size of mine for the second class.

What's up with that Ryote Mochi Shomen Iriminage-1?? Where Uke's supposed to find an escape way?? All these Shomen Irimi stuff is such a mystery for me...This is just one of them...for now.

This class was a bit not so typical Thompson Class...a bit similar to the one from last Saturday.
Sometimes, I learn so much by just looking people do in different ways.

20: Thursday 5:45 : January 26, 2006

Basic:

Technique:
Katate Mochi Sokumen Iriminage-1
Shomen Uchi Ikkajo Osae-1

Katate Mochi Shiho Nage-1

---6:30
Shomen Uchi Sokumen Iriminage-2
Kata Mochi Hijishime-1

Note:
Class of 2... ??? Great discussion class without buddies with brains : )

Its just a fact that nothing really worked on Chris...however we found some fine points to make things better.

Yonkajo: Twist (inside hand), twist (outside of hand), push (back leg to step in with front foot)
Nikajo: If it doesnt work going forward...try stepping back for a change : )

Yes, Sensei...We learn everyday...even finding not to be able to do well something what I thought I could do yesterday is learning... : )

Last Saturday, I thought I got Forward Roll, but yesterday was not quite.
Tuesday, I thought I got the idea of Katate Mochi Ikkajo, but yesterday proved I didnt.
Yesterday, I thought I finally got the basic idea of Nikajo, but today...proved me other way around...

Wednesday, January 25, 2006

19: Wednesday 7:00 : January 25, 2006

Basic:
Forward Break Rolls
Back Break Rolls

Technique:
Katate Mochi Sokumen Irimiange-1
Kata Mochi Hijishime-2
Shomen Uchi Ikkajo Osae-1
Katate Mochi Nikajo Osae-2

Note:
Class of 4,

Kata Mochi Hijishime-2: I call it the technique I never remember training even I did it for my first test. : ) I just can not capture any memory of training this one, that happened only less than a year ago...

While David and Jimmy quietly training on the other side of the mat, Drew and I made quite some noise doing the exact same techniques...interesting result.

For Forward Rolling, I was better on last Saturday. For Nikajo, definitely better than 2 months ago. Need to fix Back Roll not just to make it better, also try to avoid hurting my shoulder.

Another Wednesday...kinda quiet, valuable training session : )

Peace...

Note:
Class of 3, hope to see Honey back on the mat tomorrow : )

Non-Jiyuwaza Day, Yey!
It doesnt mean I dislike Jiyuwaza, its just so much to do without "trying to think", so its nice to be able to train basic techniques step by step.

Katate Mochi Yonkajo Osae: I tried to go through this one in my head sometime ago, I had NO IDEA even how to start... Today, we learned!! Its like a mix of Katate Mochi Ikkajo and Yonkajo!!

How to do Uke is a big something to work on...Yokomen Uchi Shiho Nage...you want to be a good uke, otherwise you easily get hurt!

Tuesday, January 24, 2006

17: Tuesday 7:00 : January 24, 2006

Suwariwaza Katate Mochi Ikkajo Osae-1
Katate Mochi Ushiro Nage (Uke Pushes, 180 pivot with right foot forward, get Uke's arm from underneath, and bring it down, go behind, get Uke's shoulder and throw)

Note: Class of 6, Such small movements make such huge difference!!

Shiho Nage: Bring up Baby finger makes the strong string to get the right Shiho Nage shape.
Katate Mochi Ikkajo: Really cool to do it Suwariwaza, could see the hands movements better.
Katate Mochi Sokumen Iriminage: We, 545, call it, the technique which doesnt exist : )
Back hand and knee make the same line, it make the strong circle only by moving the both at the same time. It gets a lot more solid. Need to work on Uke going backwards, instead staying on the same spot and collapse way earlier than supposed to.
Ushiro Nage: The Pivot, the pivot, the pivot!!!

16: Tuesday 5:45 : January 24, 2006

Basic:

Note:
Class of 3, with Stumpy: ) Honey's still away.

Holy cow! We made a step forward with Jiyuwaza practice today! How easy to go blank when you think about what to do on the mat...I wonder how long its gonna take for me to do the techniques without "thinking" what to do...

It was also nice to do non-Jiyuwaza stuff at the end.

Monday, January 23, 2006

15: Saturday 6:15 : January 21, 2006

Basic:
Forward Breakfalls
by using a bag to jump
by using a tatami line to go straight

Yokomen Uchi Practice
Right hand, and with Left hand for striking
Snapping with wrist, and with elbow

Blocking by stepping in as Shite, and with punch

Technique:
Yokomen Uchi Kokyu Nage (not sure for the name, probably not a basic technique)

Note:
Class of 5, it was snowing!!

Lots of Yokomen Uchi Practice, step by step. It takes some time to realize what I have learned for these type of classes.

I had a sensational break for my Forward Roll by landing with the right side of my fist. That way, its so much painless, better circle, better for everything. Yet later on, I came to reaize that its not for a flip, the one for the flip should come later ; )

It was too bad that my bruise on the back hand was almost gone and couldnt show Chris the result from Thrusday. I really couldnt tell that was from David or Chris, according to David, its from Chris, so I told him so but he did not like hearing, and claimed it can't happen from Nikajo.

Its totally amazing to see others rapid improvements which happens sometimes. Also, its a great oppotunity to realize Aikido only comes with training.

Not so so much moving around training session, there was a lot to learn, and it was quite entertaining to see Chris trying to smash Stumpy on the mat with his full strength.

Technique:
Shomen Uchi Ikkajo Osae-1
Katate Mochi Nikajo Osae-2
(for 6mins)

Note:
"See you tomorrow" may not mean literally "see you tomorrow" in these days?? ;)
Well, Sensei missed the class again...I was not sure if I could get up to make the class on Friday, so I was going to go if it was not TOOOOO hard to do by setting only one alarm. When I heard "I just called to say I love you" from somewhere, I seriously thought "What Stevie Wonder has got to do with my precious SLEEP!", then I realized it was my alarm : )

Then, I got to the dojo and was sitting in Seiza to start the class properly even it was for all by myself, then at the last minute, Jimmy showed! I was going to spend most of time on Kihon Dosa, so we did... I started thinking what to do after going through all of them once...with Jimmy...cant show him things, its way too hard for me to explain and do the techniques with him at the same time...ummm...so we did the whole set of Kihon Dosa again! And what I found was...you can easily get lost within yourself if you are counting Ichi, Ni doing Kihon dosa...You dont really think about "how far is this gonna go?", and what you can do is just keep going and going and going.....wow...
Of course, no one was watching my movements, I must have done it less effectively, still it was a bit scary and great feeling to know!

I was glad Jimmy stayed the whole an hour with me too! I liked his Nikajo "touch" : )

Thursday, January 19, 2006

13: Thursday 7:00 : January 19, 2006

Basic:
Hiriki no Yosei-1: Right side
Hiriki no Yosei-1: Left side
Hiriki no Yosei-2: Right side
Hiriki no Yosei-2: Left side

10 mins of Kihon Dosa, felt like FOREVER EVER...

Hiriki no Yosei-1 with Partner (5 times each)
Hiriki no Yosei-2 with Partner (5 times each)

Technique:
Mune Mochi Nikajo Osae-1
Suwariwaza Mune Mochi Nikajo Osae-1
Mune Mochi Nikajo Osae-2

(Hajime) Mune Mochi Nikajo Osae-2 ... 6 or 7 mins?

Mune Mochi Nikajo Hiji Osae

Note:
Class of 6, even more people are coming back!
Another "Thompson 'its good to be hard' Class" again... I think he's getting harder (or even harder) , and enjoying it more.

Hiriki no Yosei-1, I wanted to collapse...way too hard on my thigh and knee, did not even have any space to make it better or any other way except going lower when I was told to do.

Hiriki no Yosei-2, somehow its easier pain wise with legs or knees, yet still having difficulty making it more strongly with elbows.

The same 1 hours of time, One person ( a teacher) makes a huge difference, amazing.

12: Thursday 5:45 : January 19, 2006

Basic:

Technique:

Jiyuwaza Practice from Katate Mochi
Ikkajo
Nikajo
Shiho Nage
Shomen Iriminage

Kotegaeshi (had a question about this, so had to wait till Roland senei showed)

Note: Class of 3, John's away, no teacher.

I dont like not having a teacher for the class. hope it wont ever happen again.

2 bruises from just practicing Jiyuwaza. We tried to do the same techniques for each time to make it more effective, and precise.

Wednesday, January 18, 2006

11: Wednesday 7:00 : January 18, 2006

Basic:
Kihon Dosa for a few minutes

Technique:
Shomen Uchi Sokumen Iriminage-2
Kata Mochi Hijishime-1
Katate Mochi Shiho Nage-2

Ryote Mochi Tenchinage-1

Note:
Class of 3, again no Sensei. David and I demonstrated to Drew some techniques and went through them together.

Seeing how David does techniques tells me a lot since I usually dont get to see him doing while I'm working with him. Seeing how Drew does techniques made me think, "how do I do that?" a lot.

I was so so tired last night, and am so so sore everywhere from yesterday.

10: Wednesday 5:45 : January 18, 2006

Basic:

---

Technique:

Jiyuwaza Practice from Katate Mochi

Note:
Class of 4, the first and last time in the week for all of us together! Yet, Stumpy couldn't make
it...we booed and ouuued and practiced Jiyuwaza. Went over to review what we knew for a while, then tried to see what we could do with 3 ukes.

I tried not to "think" , then tried to apply the same techniques for 3 of them, then moved on to the next one. Clearly, Chris did not move from my pivot, my throw...basically from nothing. That probably means my body was too high and not strong enough...

Very interesting, and educational to hear guys' discussion when it comes to Jiyuwaza, they have a lot of thoughts which amaze me a lot.

Question for tomorrow:

  • Kotegaeshi
  • when to start flipping from Kokyu Nage (shift back and throw)

Tuesday, January 17, 2006

9: Tuesday 7:00 : January 17, 2006

Basic:

Tai no Henko-1: Right side (forever ever)
Tai no Henko-2: Right side (forever ever)
Tai no Henko-1: Left side (forever ever)
Tai no Henko-2: Left side (forever ever)

Tai no Henko-1 with Partner (5 times each side)
Tai no Henko-2 with Partner (5 times each side)

Technique:

Katate Aya Mochi Ikkajo Osae-1
Katate Aya Mochi Nikajo Osae-2
Katate Aya Mochi Ikkajo & Nikajo Osae-2

Note:
Class of 7, more people are coming back!
How many times did we do Kihon Dosa this morning? Interesting feeling was the more I did it the more comfortable/less unstable I felt for Tai no Henko-1, yet only more the pain with knees with Tai no Henko-2. It was such a killer.

It was my lucky day again! To be able to train with sensei for the whole time :D However, I dont think its fair for the world that I get to be thrown 3 times farther than I could do to him.
Also, he can smash my precious face onto the mat so hard while I only can pin his shoulder onto the mat a little hard.

For doing strong Nikajo-2 Uke, I have to keep moving forward and pushing inside knee forward to fall in the right spot, I am trying to hold my body by hitting the mat 2 times before I fall, it may save my knee from crashing, but I could hurt my elbow very easily.

I have been sensing the better way to do ANYTHING is to keep going forward, even as Uke, I believe it works better for a small person like me. Stay forward, fall forward, flip forward...
maybe, maybe, maybe... : )

8: Tuesday 5:45 : January 17, 2006

Basic:
Tai no Henko-1
Tai no Henko-2
Hiriki no Yosei-1
Hiriki no Yosei-2

Technique:
Jiyuwaza Practice starts from Katate Mochi
  • Ikkajo Nage
  • Kokyu Nage (Step in, Left Pivot, Step out to left, then throw)
  • Hijiate Kokyu Nage
  • Shomen Iriminage
  • Kokyu Nage (Right forward Kamae, Shift back, Palm Up and Throw towards back)
  • Shiho Nage Kuzushi
  • Yonkajo Nage
Note:
Class of 3, NO SUGAR. 4 of us (with Stumpy) kept going on the Jiyuwaza Practice. How come its so hard to take Sensei's Uke? I was going out of breath after doing Sensei's uke for the whole time.

Although I intended to make my balance steady and strong, felt doing it weakly instead. Watching Honey and David's quite solid movement, I was "thinking", maybe I dont "think" enough. If I cant get the feeling of something to click with my move, I just dont get anything...Well, thats why I keep training as MUCH as possible for my body to learn where and how to move. I think this way fits me better : )

Yonkajo Nage was very cool. It doesnt look big, going forward doing Nage, making the twist the arm toward outside which makes quite strong TWIST for Uke to resist.

I tried to fly higher doing flips today, also tried to flip straight ahead as much as possible after seeing some not so tall people flipping high Sunday at Hombu. I am short, I need space to fly when I flip out of anything. Try not to go down, go up, then I will have more time. : )

Monday, January 16, 2006

Kagamibiraki at Hombu

Demonstration for an hour

Very impressive to see that the more advanced people do aikido with less tension, less strength.

The longest Seiza time for 2006!

7: Saturday 6:15 : January 14, 2006

Basic:
Back Breakfalls (10)
Kihon Dosa (Left side)
  • Tai no Henko-1
  • Tai no Henko-2
  • Hiriki no Yosei-1
  • Hiriki no Yosei-2
Technique:
Hiji Mochi Sokumen Iriminage-1
Hiji Mochi Sokumen Iriminage-2
Ryote Mochi Tenchi Nage-1
Katate Mochi Shomen Iriminage-1
Ryote Mochi Kotegaeshi-2

Note:
Class of 2, Black Belts and me! Worked on a lot of details! I requested to practice falling without losing my head, and flips.

Need to work on Kihon Dosa. Stay lower, keeping back straight.

Hiji Mochi Sokumen Iriminage: Dont try to push Uke down, turn an arm around and go forward with pushing the back leg from the hip.

Tenchi Nage tip was the coolest!

Shomen Iriminage from Katate Mochi: Take Uke off the balance by bringing the hand up and making the circle, then move to throw (there is a direction to go, which I can sometimes find)

Ryote Mochi Kotegaeshi: I was too busy trying to get out of the pain twisted arm, and not so be able to feel if how I was pushed/ pulled with kotegaeshi.

Thursday, January 12, 2006

6: Thursday 7:00 : January 12, 2006

Kata Mochi Sokumen Iriminage-1
Kata Mochi Nikajo
Kata Mochi Sankajo

Note:
Class of 5, such an owner to take Sensei's Uke for the whole class ; ) Yet, it was a quite embrrassment to go right down to the mat with Sokumen Iriminage, And being spinned like a cotton candy...good thing was that I did not fell down : )

I felt so much better than yesterday for my movement. Its goot to feel for something to come back.

5: Thursday 5:45 : January 12, 2006

  15. Cut down Uke's hand and Pivot with Left foot foward
  16. Step in from Right foot forward and Cut down Uke's hand and Pivot with Left foot forward
  17. Push Uke aside and walk away

I think we tried 17 of above...

---6:30

Jiyuwaza techniques started from the above Katate Mochi

David's pick: 7 & 3

My pick: 15 & 12

Note:

Class of 3, wonder what colour Honey would be today.

So many patterns to start Jiyuwaza! Seeing Chris grinning during training was very unusual, and a bit scary. Somehow it makes me less uncomfortable seeing his "I will smash you down!" face which he keeps all the time.

Wednesday, January 11, 2006

4: Wednesday 7:00 : January 11, 2006

Basic:
  • Tai no Henko-1
  • Tai no Henko-2

Technique:

  • Shomen Uchi Ikkajo Osae-1
  • Katate Mochi Nikajo Osae-2
  • Nikajo Practice

Note:

Class of 3.

Stumpy let us teach Jimmy the techniques! Knowing John is very good , on the other hand...I'm not. While I was taking John's Uke for explaining Ikkajo with all the details, my mind was saying, "this isnt gonna happen from me!" Yet, I was not as bad as I thought I would do ; )

Points for me to work on:

Tai no Henko-1: To make 90 degrees with front and back feet, I also find its the comfortable position to stay strong.

Tai no Henko-2: To go lower with front knee, to push both feet against the mat using the back of thigh...it makes less painful with knees while in the position, yet my thighs are sore already only 2 hrs later.

Ikkajo: I end up kneeling too wide to start Ikkajo Osae part, it can get more solid and stable with body balance AND make the whole thing better...

Nikajo: I losen my Nikajo when I do it even I have it when I come to the position. ( at least, thats what I'm told) The advise from Stumpy is that to bring Nikajo shape towards me even I am not supposed to do just to keep the Nikajo shape.

3: Wednesday 5:45 : January 11, 2006

Basic:
  • Tai no Henko-1 with Partner
  • Tai no Henko-2 with Partner

Technique:

  • Shomen Uchi Shomen Iriminage-1
  • Shomen Uchi Shomen Iriminage-2
  • Yokomen Uchi Shomen Iriminage-1
  • Yokomen Uchi Shomen Iriminage-2
  • Suwariwaza Yokomen Uchi Shomen Iriminage-1
  • Suwariwaza Yokomen Uchi Shomen Iriminage-2

---6:30

  • Ikkajo Nage
  • Nikajo Nage
  • Sankajo Nage
  • Shomen Iriminage (3 paterns)
  • Kokyu Nage
  • Shiho Nage.........and more

Note:

Class of 4! Honey was blue... It is VERY VERY cold to train with barefoot, guys were joking (or they could be serious) having own Dojo somewhere with nice and warm climate and bring Stumpy there with a mosburgar franchise : D It is so much fun to train with all of us together.

I felt my body was making a lot better movements compare to yesterday...still not so much in everywhere though...

Doing Uke for Suwariwaza Shomen Iriminage needs a lot of practice!! Otherwise, its easy to get my toes broken.

Note:

Class of 3, the first class of 2006! We did so so so much while my body was not moving anywhere close to the way supposed to...

Tacking my head, to avoid hitting my precious head on the mat, is somehow the hardest to do for me esp. when Chris throws me...damn!

I think...Honey's spirit was with me this morning, even his body wasnt with us... ; )
